Has Piers Morgan Taken a Controversial Step Too Far? What you need to know

Piers Morgan has once again stirred up controversy with another interview. Last week, the English broadcaster conducted a discussion with the real-life Martha from Netflix’s hit series Baby Reindeer.

In the heated debate, which has already amassed over 11 million views, the duo delved into Netflix’s new hit series Baby Reindeer, inspired by actor and comedian Richard Gadd’s harrowing experience with a female stalker.

All credits go to the New York Post

But since it’s air, his interview has caused backlash

Since the interview’s release, Morgan has faced widespread criticism. Viewers and victims of stalking have labeled it as “unethical” and “exploitative,” expressing concerns for Ms. Harvey’s well-being.

Reflecting on his recent interview with Martha, Morgan argued that Fiona Harvey was “failed” by Netflix. He told ITV’s Lorraine show that Netflix did not adequately protect Harvey’s identity, as she was identified by internet sleuths just days after the series premiered. He emphasized that Netflix now faces legal questions for promoting Baby Reindeer as a “true story.” Harvey has stated she is considering suing Netflix.

Outside public perspective, Harvey has expressed feeling “used” by Morgan, claiming he focused heavily on the thousands of emails she allegedly sent Gadd. She also demanded £1 million from Morgan, stating she was only paid £250 for the appearance. Morgan responded, stating that while she won’t receive a million pounds, he believes they fulfilled their duty of care by covering her expenses.

Harvey is also demanding £1 million from Netflix and wants the series removed from the platform, threatening legal action if her demands aren’t met.

But baby reindeer is a lesson to all on keeping safe and taking precautions

But the release of the show and Morgan’s interview has shed light on stalking. According to a study conducted by The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, 1 in 5 young people ages 16-24 in the UK have experienced stalking or harassment, with 1 in 10 being stalked online.

Stalking is a serious issue with far-reaching consequences. Physically, it can escalate to violence, while mentally, it can lead to anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Socially, it isolates victims from friends and activities, and academically, it can cause grades and job performance to plummet. Financially, costs for moving, security, and counseling add up. Cyberstalking adds another layer of threat.

To stay safe, young people should stay aware of their surroundings, lock down personal info, and communicate boundaries clearly. Documenting everything and seeking help when needed are crucial steps. By understanding the risks and taking proactive measures, young people can protect themselves and ensure their well-being. Stay vigilant, stay connected, and stay safe!
