UK reports the arrival of new Contagious Covid Variant

Introduction

In 2020, a virus called COVID-19 turned the world upside down. For months the world went into lockdown, shutting everything down and confining everyone to their homes. The world completely stopped, a phenomenon we have never seen before. 5 years later, when it seems as though the world has finally adjusted, a new variant has appeared. In a recent development, UK health authorities have reported the arrival of a new highly contagious COVID-19 variant called NB.1.8.1. As a result, concerns have been raised regarding the impact on public health and the entire globe.

What is the new N 1.8.1?

The NB.1.8.1 is a new subvariant of the Omicron strain, the virus that causes Covid-19. It was first identified at the start of the year, and since has been detected in many countries. This ranges across the globe, including the United States, Australia, Thailand, China and Hong Kong. And recently, it  has been confirmed to be cases in parts of Northern Ireland and Wales.  Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and public health bodies across the UK have since been keeping a close eye on NB.1.8.1.

Despite the fact its arrival is fairly new, the NB.1.8.1 has garnered a lot of attention. This is mainly due to its high transmissibility, and how highly contagious it is. According to global sequence data, NB 1.8.1 is now responsible for over 10% of all new COVID-19 cases across the globe. This has people worried because it suggests that the variation spreads a lot faster than previous ones.

Is it more dangerous than past variants?

But despite the fact this new variant seems to be spreading faster, current data shows it to not be more dangerous than its predecessors. Just like other variations of the virus, it mainly affects the respiratory system. So far most cases have presented mild to moderate symptoms.

However, this virus is more contagious, placing more pressure on the NHS. This is particularly during flu season or in areas with lower vaccination rates. Furthemore vulnerable groups such as the elderly, or those with pre-existing health conditions are also at high risk.

The Symptoms

NB.1.8.1 has similar symptoms to past Omicron variants. However people have reported additional ones such as gastrointestinal problems. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, whilst some individuals experience no symptoms at all.

The most commonly reported symptoms include:

  • Sore Throat
  • Fatigue
  • Runny or Blocked nose
  • Mild to moderate fever
  • Muscles aches
  • Headache
  • Dry or mild cough
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach
  • Non-appetite

The arrival of this new variant is a reminder that COVID-19 still exists today, despite the lockdown being 5 years ago. However we have evolved since its emergence. Here are some effective steps you can take to stay protected and reduce the spreading of it.

1. Get Vaccinated

This is the most effective defence against serious illness, hospitalization and in severe cases death from covid. Ensure that you have gotten all advised doses and booster shots. This is especially if you’re in a higher-risk group such as the elderly, or you suffer a chronic illness.

2. Get Tested if you are Experiencing Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, then it’s a good idea to take a lateral flow test where possible. By detecting it early, you can prevent unintentionally spreading the virus.

3. Good Hygiene is Key

Basic hygiene can go a long way, helping prevent the spread of the virus. Doing simple things such as washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, using hand sanitiser and not touching your face, especially your nose, eyes and mouth. These steps really help in reducing transmission.

4. Stay Home if your not Well

Avoid contact with others, particularly vulnerable groups, and give your body the time it needs to rest and recover.

5. Keep Indoor Spaces Well-Ventilated

Whenever you can, open windows and doors to improve airflow indoors. By doing so, the good ventilation will reduce the chance of airborne transmission. Right now it’s summer, so chances of this are low. But during the colder months when gatherings move indoors, this is needed.

6. Be smart and aware when Travelling

Stay informed about what’s going on regarding Covid cases on your chosen destination before traveling. Additionally, do your research. Some countries and airlines require you to be tested and vaccinated before you arrive.

7. Look after yourself, not just physically but mentally too

New Variants constantly emerge, which can naturally stir up feelings of anxiety and concern. But don’t let these things affect you mentally. Continue to make time for yourself and the things you live, stay connected with your loved ones and seek support if you’re overwhelmed.

Conclusion

The new Covid variation isn’t as bad as we think. Yes it is true NB.1.8.1 is highly contagious. But by staying educated, informed, and practicing the practical steps mentioned above, you can protect yourself, loved ones and your community.
