George the Poet is a Ugandan-British spoken-word artist, poet, rapper, and podcaster. What started off as rap and grime performances at the age of 15 has blossomed into a successful career, with his lyrical commentary on British social life and political issues reaching a wide audience and inspiring the nation.
Background and Education
George was born in north-west London to Ugandan parents. He grew up in a vibrant yet challenging environment, which significantly influenced his perspective and creative side. His interest in music began at 15 years old, performing rap and grime at local events and showcases. During this time, he attended the prestigious Queen Elizabeth’s School in Barnet, North London. During these school days he successfully balanced his studies with this growing passion for music.
Subsequently he continued his studies at King’s College, Cambridge. There he studied Politics, Psychology, and Sociology at King’s College, Cambridge. It was during his time at university where he discovered his love of poetry. Reflecting on his transition, George said:
“I think rappers are primarily expected to make money for the industry and provide party soundtracks, but obviously there are exceptions and gray areas. The poet’s ‘role’ is usually to provide thoughtful social commentary.” He says, “I wanted to be in a space of ideas. But I want it to be a beautiful space. Poetry is the artistic wing of politics. Which is why I encourage all poets to stop writing about their breakups.”

Signing with a Record Deal and Releasing his Debut EP
In 2014, George signed a record deal with Island Records and released his debut EP, “The Chicken and the Egg,” to critical acclaim. The EP was widely acclaimed for its transparency and insightful storytelling. It offered listeners a new perspective on personal and societal issues. Since then, he has released many more music tracks and poems, including “Search Party,” which became a huge hit. Overall he has had a very successful career, and solidified his reputation as an important voice in British culture.
The success of his career has led to him reaching new heights. An example of this would be the numerous nationwide tours, live performances and numerous appearances on major platforms. This includes featuring on BBC Radio 1, Newsnight, and in the national press. His popularity and acclaim with the public afforded him the opportunity to open the BBC coverage of the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. This was a pivotal moment for me because he was able to bring poetry to a global audience during a historic event.
Additionally, he was shortlisted in the Critics’ Choice category at the 2015 BRIT Awards and came fifth in the BBC Sound of 2015 poll. It’s notable recognition that cemented his status as a cultural icon making big moves.

George’s PhD
But beyond all these artistic, celebratory achievements, George continues to be deeply committed to academic and community work. He’s currently a PhD candidate, researching how Black music can be utilized to create a better Black world. He does this by exploring the intersection of art, culture and politics in shaping society. His upcoming book, Track Record promises to expand on this mission by examining power dynamics that influence how we understand the world. Additionally it’s an empowering strategy to draw attention to limitations of Black creativity and Black success.
