What’s going on in UK Politics? Everything you need to Know

Introduction

Politics is always going to be a controversial topic that naturally sparks up debate. But nonetheless it’s important that we stay informed and updated. Whether young or old, the political decisions made today do affect you.

Just under a year ago, the Labour Party won the general election. Thus their party leader Keir Starmer became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. As such the UK has entered a new political era, with big decisions being made that could shape the dynamic and overall structure of the country for years. This includes changes to benefits and defence spending, as well as new green energy plans and stricter immigration laws. These are all things that affect the job market, cost of living and freedoms.

So lets breakdown what’s going on in UK Politics

Division Arises Amongst the Labour Party over Welfare Cuts

One of the biggest stories this week, and pressing concerns amongst the government is the rebellion within the Labour Party. Over 100 Labour MPs have signed a “reasoned amendment.” That is to block controversial changes to disability benefits, primarily the Personal Independence Payments (PIP) that is claimed by over 3 million people.

This is a big deal, because it threatens Starmers majority. He insisted that such changes are necessary, to “modernise” an “outdated” and “unsustainable” system, before it collapses. That by reforming the system, it will better short those in need of it. However concerns arise from Labour Backbenchers, charities and disability campaign groups, who believe such cuts will have severe effects on such vulnerable citizens, and increase inequality.

In order to come to a resolution, a common vote has been scheduled for next week. Whilst things are looking promising for Starmer, this internal division could come back to bite him, raising questions about his authority. But such a cut will affect if you or people you know rely on benefits. These changes will determine and affect the kind of support that is accessible. It also shows contradictions within the Labour government. During campaigns for elections, they made promises of creating a system of fairness and equality, yet they’re pulling apart the welfare system that does just that.

National Security and Defence in Focus

Defence and national security have become a key part of the UK political agenda. This is in response to growing global threats and instability. At this month’s NATO summit, the government announced that funding for defence would increase by 5%, to strengthen National Security. This will include allocating more funds towards nuclear weapons, fighter jets, missile defences and cybersecurity.

The government reasoning behind this is for safeguarding purposes. They believe that introducing such measures will work in the interests of the UK’s sovereignty and against international threats. Such a move has widely been praised and supported by NATO allies. Additionally, it will open jobs and careers in security, engineering and tech, boosting the country’s job market. However, critics raise questions. After all this is a significant military investment, and with cuts being made to public service such as the NHS, welfare benefits and educational youth programs, does it really work in the best interest of the country?

Rebuilding the Economy: A Modern Industrial Strategy

Over the last couple of years, the UK has been in a cost of living crisis. That is, the economy has faced uncertainty and slow growth. Well the UK government has had enough and is opting for resolution. Thus they’ve introduced a new Modern Industrial Strategy. This is a 10 year plan that will grow industries such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, life sciences and digital technology, in hopes of renewing the economy.

A major highlight of this strategy is the Great British Energy, a publicly owned clean energy company, that will aid the UK’s transition to renewable energy. The government has created this company to drive down bills and create thousands of future jobs and apprenticeships.

New Stricter Immigration Laws are coming into place

Over a month ago, the government announced its newest immigration white paper. The purpose of this is to change the country’s migration system. It pledges to reduce net migration, impose stricter laws on the asylum seeking process and implement an overall more strict, selective system.

The government believes that by doing this, it’ll repair the broken system. Furthermore it’ll create a more national based workforce, with British workers being encouraged to take on roles done by immigrants. However, concerns on the lack of diversity have arised, as well as questions on the future appeal of international students, and current immigrant workers.

Conclusion

Politics is always changing, with new announcements and changes being made everyday. But nonetheless it’s important to stay informed and up to date with what is going on. Remember, decisions made today affect your tomorrow. Knowing what’s going on well help you adapt in areas that concern or impact you.
