Introduction: Young Voices, Real Power
Last month in Rochdale, Co-operatives UK hosted the National Youth Summit 2025, bringing together young co-operators from across the UK—and beyond—to join the Co-op Congress. The message? It’s time for youth to lead, not just be heard.
Co-op UK CEO Rose Marley set the tone:
“Democracy in our everyday lives will become the new democracy.”
Your generation, she said, holds the solutions. That’s not just optimism—it’s a call to action.
What Happened at the Summit?
- Young changemakers took centre stage: Perry Blake (21UP CIC), May Armstrong (Glasgow Student Housing Co-op), Anthony Scott (Kitty’s Launderette), and Lottie Pendlebury (Sister Midnight).
- Panels explored youth-led solutions in housing, finance, art, media and mental health.
- Sile Sibanda hosted real-talk sessions where guests broke down their biggest “aha!” moments in life and leadership.
- Workshops gave young people the practical tools to start their own co-operatives.
Why It Matters for Young UK People
Real Influence, Not Tokenism
This summit wasn’t about performative panels. The Youth Advisory Group (YAG) gives 18–30-year-olds real power: paid positions, strategy input, and year-round involvement.
This isn’t just “youth voice” — it’s youth power.
Building Community Through Action
From laundrettes to live music venues, young people aren’t waiting for permission. They’re building co-ops to tackle real problems: housing insecurity, job gaps, and the lack of safe creative spaces.
New Career Pathways
For those locked out of traditional 9–5s or frustrated by endless job rejections, co-ops offer a real alternative: meaningful work, ownership, and purpose.
The Impact on the Youth Landscape
1. Those Missing Opportunities (Post-Uni or College)
Youth unemployment is rising. And many graduates feel stuck. Events like this open doors—where young people build careers that align with their values.
2. Youth-Led = Real Change
Take Perry Blake. At just 23, he launched 21UP, a movement helping hundreds of other young people through empowerment workshops, education, and community events.
If he can do it—so can you.
3. Co-Creation Over Consultation
Too often, young people are invited to speak but not shape decisions. The Co-op Summit changed that. It asked:
“What do you want to build?”
Then handed over the mic and the toolkit.
Youth Corner: How to Plug In
Here’s how young people like you can tap in:
Apply for the Youth Advisory Group (YAG)
– It’s paid, legit, and you get a say in national strategy.
Start or Join a Co-op
– From creative spaces to student housing, you can create your own career path and help your community.
Show up at the next summit
– Network, build, learn—and connect with people who think like you.
Use your platforms
– TikTok, Reels, Threads—wherever you are, share the mission.
The Bigger Picture
The event wasn’t just for young people. MPs, journalists, and CEOs attended too. Their message?
“Young people aren’t the future. They’re the now.”
And with the cost of living crisis, rising rents, and unstable job markets, it’s clear: young people need systems built for them—not around them.
Final Thoughts: This Wasn’t Just Another Youth Event
This summit wasn’t about tokenising the next generation.
It was a reminder that:
Young voices deserve real power
You can co-create the world you want to live in
Co-ops are a career path, not a charity project
Mental health, purpose and pay can all co-exist in youth-led business
So if you’ve ever felt like your voice isn’t being heard…
If you’ve ever said “I don’t want a regular job”…
If you’re ready to build something that matters…
Then this is your sign.
Welcome to the co-op era.
