Horrific Earthquake Killed More Than 140 in Myanmar 

Myanmar was hit by a terrible earthquake on March 28, 2025, which destroyed a lot of property and killed many people. With a magnitude of 7.7, the quake happened 10 kilometres below the surface near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. This made the shocks even more dangerous. Over 700 people have been hurt, and at least 144 have been declared dead. Many buildings and roads have fallen, and hospitals in the affected areas are overloaded. Buildings have collapsed, and some areas have become too dangerous to enter. Hospitals in Naypyidaw, the capital, are full. Some patients are receiving treatment outside as the buildings have been deemed unsafe. 

Mandalay was one of the hardest-hit areas. A large monastery and several apartment buildings collapsed. A dam burst, flooding nearby regions. Destroyed roads and bridges have cut off access to remote areas.  Many people are digging through rubble to find survivors with their bare hands.

Other Areas Affected

The earthquake’s effects were felt far beyond Myanmar. Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is over 1,000 kilometres away from Mandalay. Yet, the quake caused a 33-story building under construction to collapse there. At least 17 people died in Bangkok, and over 80 remain missing. Tremors were also felt in northern Thailand, Yunnan province in China, and Bangladesh. 

China reported some injuries and damaged homes in Yunnan province. The shaking was so strong that people couldn’t stand in some areas. Videos showed streets covered in debris.

Stories of Survival and Rescue

Survivors have shared terrifying stories of the quake. People in Mandalay said buildings swayed as walls and ceilings cracked. Rescuers saved a woman who had been trapped under rubble for 30 hours. 

Rescuers are working day and night. They are using limited tools and equipment to search for people. Some teams have pulled out survivors, but many remain trapped. First responders say the situation is heartbreaking and very challenging.

Rescue Efforts and Challenges

Rescue teams face many difficulties in Myanmar. Damaged roads and bridges block their way to some towns, and hospitals do not have enough space or supplies to treat everyone. Myanmar’s military government has declared a state of emergency in six regions and is asking for help from other countries and organizations.
