Everything you need to know the day before the US Election

Today is the day we have all been waiting for…

It’s the biggest day in US politics. The day that the country will come together and vote for the next president. It’s a huge deal, with candidates campaigning all year round in preparation for this day.

It’s a tight race between the Republicans and the Democrats. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are set to go head-to-head. And in a matter of hours, the president of the United States will be elected.

Because of how tight this election is, extra attention is being paid to swing states. This election has 7 in total:

  • Georgia
  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania
  • Michigan
  • Wisconsin
  • Arizona
  • Nevada

When can we expect to hear the results?

Well, the first polls close at 6 p.m. EST (equivalent to 11 p.m. GMT). The second and final poll will close at 1 a.m. EST early Wednesday. This is equivalent to 6 a.m. GMT.

In previous presidential races, the winner has been announced late on election night or early the following morning. So it would be wise to assume this year would follow tradition.

However, this year has been a knife-edge race between the states, meaning that it may take longer for media outlets to make the announcement. But all we can do is hope for the best, and that the results are announced before tomorrow ends.

So we all know that the race is between Harris and Trump. But do you know what their campaigns and policies are? Well, let’s go through it.

Kamala Harris Campaign

Kamala Harris is the nominee running on behalf of the Democratic Party. She is currently serving as the Vice President of the United States under the leadership of Joe Biden.

As part of her campaign, Harris launched a comprehensive policy platform called “New Way Forward.” This was done alongside her running mate, Tim Walz. The detailed agenda maps out her vision for a more equal economy and protecting civil rights. Additionally, she aims to tackle national concerns, such as healthcare, climate change, and gun violence.

Kamala Harris Strategies and Policies

Let’s go over some of her strategies and policies:

  • Opportunity Economy: This is the center of her economic plan, which aims to give every American the foundation to thrive, irrespective of where they live. Her agenda includes cutting taxes for more than 100 million working and middle-class Americans, expanding Child Tax Credits, and restoring the Earned Income Tax Credit. She criticizes Trump’s “Project 2025,” which she says only focuses on tax cuts for the wealthy. She emphasizes a fairer tax system through a proposed billionaire minimum tax. Her reform will create equality by making the wealthy pay the same as the middle class while still stimulating economic growth.
  • Climate Change and Minimizing Energy Costs: She already started her agenda during her time as Vice President, where she helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest climate investment in U.S. history. She has provisions for more investments. The overall aim: reduce household energy costs while creating millions of clean energy jobs. She criticizes Trump for downplaying its urgency and supporting fossil fuel industries such as coal and Big Oil. Environmental safeguarding is pivotal.
  • Combating Gun Violence: As Vice President, she passed the first major gun control legislation in 30 years. But as president, she plans to ban assault weapons, expand background checks, and implement red flag laws. She criticizes Trump’s stance for aligning with the gun lobby and showing little support for gun control measures. She claims Trump’s policies will increase gun violence, whereas hers will reduce it and create safer communities.

Donald Trump Campaign

Donald Trump is the nominee running on behalf of the Republican Party. He served as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021. His running mate is JD Vance.

His misión is to “make America great again.” He plans to reduce taxes, improve the economy and tighten immigration.

Donald Trump Strategies and Policies

  • Taxes: Trump has said he would extend tax cuts enacted in 2017, which will reduce taxes for most Americans. Additionally, he wants to eliminate federal taxes on tips. Harris has also taken this initiative on board with her campaign, which many criticized for echoing Trump. Additionally, he wants to end income taxes on Social Security benefits.
  • Immigration: Trump is focused on border control and enforcing laws to regulate immigration. Famously, during his 2016 campaign, he gained attention with his promise of “building a wall,” and he has vowed to complete this and seal the border. He is also working toward policies that will result in a mass deportation of undocumented migrants, potentially the largest in US history.

Conclusion

It’s a tight election, maybe even one of the closest we have ever seen in history. But who will be the next president, Harris or Trump?
