New ofcom regulations : what does that mean for Social media ?

The New online safety act

OFCOM has stated that social media platforms will be facing punishments for the lack of improval to keeping children safe online.

More effective measurements have been put in place to change the harmful effects of children online. 

One of the new implementations that has been introduced in this attempt is the issuing of fines for services like facebook, instagram and whatsapp.

Through failing to comply with the new online safety act these platforms will be forced to pay a fine this will be taking action early 2025 ( next year).

All social media platforms will have three months once the new guidelines are finalized to then carry out all the risk assessments for the apps and make all the relevant changes needed to ensure the children’s safety.

OFCOM has been creating codes of practice from when the online safety act became a new law.

The act will require the social media platforms to protect anyone underage from specific content such as self – harm materials, sexual materials and violent materials.

For parents in the UK, another big issue has been the lack of change in the time frame being given. The changes that have been stated have taken too long for parents to remain patient any longer.

The social networking services and OFCOM regulations have been working alongside each other to ensure the new legal safeguarding becomes enforced properly.

They want the online special forms to take responsibility for their part to play in the lack of safety oif children online
